  • Wallpaper Wednesday: Hygge & West by Oh Joy!

The living room of Joy Cho of the blog Oh Joy! may look familiar. It is a 2-part cool story: The wallpaper was designed by Joy for Hygge & West and then was used in the living room  make-over story on the popular HGTV show Secrets from a Stylist.

The Petal Pusher wallpaper in gold is beautiful and the room itself, stunning. A double win! The mix of old & new pieces as well as all of the layers of furniture, objects & art is irresistible!

What's your favorite part of Joy Cho's room?

  • household-ing it: Parents Magazine March 2012

Last Fall we were approached by Parents Magazine to use our living room as an inspiration piece for a story on creating a stylish living room that had 'room for kids & adults alike.

Because we also have a baby & kids shop, fawn&forest a feature in Parents Magazine is quite fitting! I was nervous & excited all at once. Fun!

It was an overall great experience. Above are some snapshots of the March 2012 issue of Parents Magazine. The space was styled by Chelsea Fuss and photographed by Lincoln Barbour.

You can read the online version here and read Chelsea Fuss' perspective & style picks, here.

One note: our living room was under the art direction that emphasized an array of storage solutions and 'stylish places to sit.  A few items (including the floor pillows & star storage bins) we used as an example & are not personally owned.

Also fun: this article, "Room for Everyone" will be a segment on the Today Show on March 20th  with Parents Magazine Lifestyle Editor, Amanda Kingsloff.

  • Inspiration: Wallpaper Wednesday!

Happy Leap Day & Happy Wallpaper Wednesday!

Wallpaper is fun & frightening (so much more permanent than paint!) but is beautiful & sets a confident tone in a room. We have so many amazing patterns & brands in our shop that I want to share them with you.

    Wallpaper Wednesday it is, then.

Today's pick: Ferm Living Berry Black. The subtle pattern is high contrast & would look great in a room with lots of color without being overwhelming.

  • Make/Do: Seeds & Sprouts

Spring is right around the corner! In Portland, we get overly excited about the first bud on the cherry blossom trees & the first eager daffodil to nudge out of the ground. Spring also means it's time to start thinking about a garden. No matter how big or small, every garden starts with seeds.

One way to get instant-gardening gratification is to "sprout". Loads of things can be sprouted from legumes (such as lentils), grains (wheatberries/wheatgrass wins this one) and many seeds ( also called micro greens - which is what's in the teacup above). If you think perhaps growing micro greens will become your new domestic obsession, check this out?

If you have the space, will you soon start some seedlings to later plant in your garden? This year I have lettuce, green beans, tomatoes & herbs on my 'to garden list. I'm not much of a gardener, but this year plan to do a bit more than last.

  • Set the table! Ferm Living Dishware.

Happy Friday everyone! If your weekend plans include a leisurely breakfast or having friends over for dinner, then be inspired by Ferm Living's Dinnerware. The peppy patterns and spring-ish colorway will make you want to set the table even if just for yourself!

I love the interesting shape of the dishes. The straight sides of the bowls & bit of lip on the plate adds a playful yet functional element. Ferm Living dishes look just as amazing stacked up in a row as they would with a pile of pancakes on Saturday morning! Yum.

Which do you prefer - a more traditional set of dishes with a softer edge or something more edgy like Ferm Living?

  • Inspired & Trendworthy: Dark Walls

Well, would you do it? Paint your walls dark? Black, grey? Chalkboard? It's so daring & dramatic!

I have been inspired by all the dark walls I have seen lately. A couple trends I have noticed:
    1. Dark walls are often offset with high-contrast colors - white & light wood.
    2. Rooms that have dark walls are not over decorated. After a few key objects, the room spells perfection.
    3. Dark walls work in any room of the house from the kitchen, bath & bedroom .. even the nursery!
    4. Not all walls are painted dark - especially if the dark wall is a chalkboard wall.
    5. The rooms appear to be well lit. Forget about painting your walls dark if you have cruddy lighting.
