INSPIRATION: CHRISTIEN MEINDERTSMA
You may be familiar with Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma and her gigantic knitting and urchin poufs, but her amazing projects span a variety of materials and topics. She explores new unconventional ways to highlight traditional raw materials and the results are just fantastic.
The third photo shows a lamp created through her collaboration with traditional rope makers and woodworkers to create products made locally from flax. This material used to be one of the most important textile fibers in The Netherlands, but nowadays is farmed then mainly shipped to China. The fourth photo depicts her Tree Track project, a tree-shaped toy train track made from the wood from a complete beech tree, showing the beauty of the original source. The bottom photo shows her One Sheep Sweater project, where the sole flock of merino wool sheep in The Netherlands produced enough wool to create one sweater per sheep. The yarn will be knit on a 3-D knitting machine, producing an item that is "low tech and high tech at the same time."
