    shhh | H&H Blog

    1.  SHHH
I've taken a break from the H&H blog over the past month or so. We took a glorious vacation to Carmel & San Francisco California ... a coastal northern ca & southern oregon roadtrip -- such a fantastic time we had! Since home, i've been making plum jam, pear sauce and otherwise finishing up with the summer garden (and a bit late to start my planting for fall, but oh!). It's been a beautiful (and hot!) country summertime and I wouldn't trade living in the countryside for anything. Getting out, being inspired. Living an authentic life. image via.

Also? Fall is just about here. This scarf in canada dark green & this dress by rachel comey are both on my list.

    onions | H&H Blog

    2. inspired by the harvest
there is so much natural beauty in the autumn harvest right now that it feels like such a waste to gather interior inspiration from someone else's kitchen or colorway. trends are prepackaged cookies compared to the rich cream, golds & darks ... and the  ever so slight bit of greens of a pile of onions pulled fresh out of the dirt!

I was able to edge in on the remaining 2014 CSA from Working Hands Farm and far more than the dinner menu is in high inspiration. Seriously.

Unrelated to onions and perhaps a couple years old, but i love this --  Jay Z's chat with an "old lady" ... is well, charming in both directions. watch it here.

    aesop & kinfolk | H&H Blog

    1. aesop / kinfolk / portland
portland is cool and we all know that. but locals have even more to toot our horn about ... 2 new aesop stores will be opening up early august .. one in the west end and a second on nw 23rd. seriously now.

aesop will be launching their new shops in conjunction with kinfolk (with a preview of their new fall edition 'The Imperfect Issue') on thursday august 7th at the west end location (1300 w. burnside) .. rsvp [email protected] to join the celebration.

    woo!

    bloodstream | H&H Blog

    2. imperfect
speaking of kinfolk, i guess ... and imperfection ... perhaps. i thought this snippet on bloodstream was interesting. she nutshell-ed it with this one:

"It’s so important for us to remember what is real, what we can expect of ourselves and what is a modern minimalist fairytale. Live a distinguished existence, but not at the expense of beauty that cannot be curated, the beauty that is real and happens when you aren’t riding through the forest in your Swedish Hasbeens on your light blue cruiser with a puppy in your basket on your way to an outdoor garden party with string lights and handsome humans. Remember the spark that cannot be contrived from selecting your surroundings."

You can read the rest here, well put.

also, on another note if i were in seattle tonight you bet i'd be at the twin peaks / david lynch night at the SAM. creepy northwest woodsy drama & cherry pie with coffee? totally.

wild herb curd | H&H Blog

    3. wild herb curd
nettles clearly scare me after being relentlessly stung by them as a kid, but i'd be all down with the wild herb curd (also, fun to say...) in this recipe for nettle bread by fork & flower.

unrelated to nettles, please add the cripple creek perfume by na nin to your must have list. i can almost smell it...

    1. bathroom
three things: the enamelware sink, towel rack ladder & that shelf with brushes, soap & such. perfect for my half bath downstairs that has mostly a utility function (kids washing their hands after they come in from outside .. dirty!). i'll take 1 bathroom remodel on the double! image via.

    2. kitchen bits
summer is in full swing. outdoor cooking and an over-abundance of herbs equals this diy herb basting brush from food republic. brilliant.

also? i love this minimalist baking mat from Ricardo. i got rid of my old silpats last year when we moved .. they were so gross & stained. i've found that i really miss not having them and dislike all the waste of parchment paper when i'm baking.

and? Bulgarian Yogurt starter is on my list, we always have a batch of homemade yogurt going .. nothing better! The Scandinavian Piimä starter also sounds amazing. Mmmmm.

    1. summer house lifestyle
Monday was my birthday and we beautifully spent it doting around the countryside in search of blueberry bushes (check! bought 12), peony plants (bought 3 from this amazing farm, oh to see it all in bloom!) and as a bonus ended up with a Meyer Lemon Tree. When I think of summer houses (or the lake house as my family would call it) I think of slower days that have an expectation of being enjoyed. Outdoor projects & gardening, long evenings & amazing meals with the ones you love. Living on a beautiful piece of property in the countryside, I realized, this 'summer house attitude of living' can be my everyday. And... so it is.

    2. nature's tone
Natural objects have a profound way of harmonizing, complimenting, contrasting. I think an entire room could be assimilated around these mushrooms .. the metal .. the black. Beautiful...

    1. it's personal
This image has been quite popular on Pinterest over the weekend for a reason -- it's such a lovely example of personal style while being totally void of trending product placement. You get a sense of the person's intent. As much as I love to sell amazing products (ahem!) I am so bored with products defining personal style. Products as the cornerstone of style is void because anybody can purchase them.  I am 110% more thrilled to find amazing objects at an estate or tag sale because in those moments you know your unique style.

I can't find exactly where this image is from but I think it belongs to Gingerbread House.

    3. this conversation
I love the comment/conversation on this pin by Montse Gimferrer:

Marco Jongmans: Funny; 'Helvetica, the smell of nothing' and 'air, water and you'. I very much like that idea as I still believe really good architecture should be something like that; nothing to be realy noticed. Thanks for sharing.

Montse Gimferrer: I like that comment as some of the architecture seems more about the architect and make a statement but not the function that has to do and breaks de landscape in a not so elegant way.

Marco Jongmans: I agree, some of the architecture we see seems to be more about the ego of the architect than about making a suiting frame for the function it serves. Helvetica was very much designed to be as neutral as possible so not to distract from the meaning of the words it formed.

Ego of the architect .... distracting from the meaning of what is formed ... I think this can apply into many areas of our visual life/design/style ...
