at the table with ... is a series of interviews with some of my favorite designers, bakers and makers. A snippet of conversation that would happen over coffee.
Today we sit down with the talented Dino Sanchez, designer of both lighting and beautiful objects.
"This is our dining table. It's where I start my day with a cup of coffee, drawing out ideas and getting my mind moving. It's where I end my day having dinner with my family." - Dino Sanchez
What is the first thing you made?
Hard to remember the very first thing, but for my company, a prototype of the Bracket Lamp was probably the first thing. It didn't last longer than a week, as I tend to iterate different versions off the same prototype.
What is your favorite meal and who is your favorite person/people to enjoy it with?
My default meal for the past few years has been an avocado and tomato salad with olive oil. Quick, easy and light. That's on my own, but there's nothing better than sitting down with my wife and 3 year old daughter for some good old Brooklyn pizza.
What sparks your creativity?
It's random, honestly. We receive information in such large quantities from so many different places now, it's hard to keep track. To help pace that a bit, I've gotten into the practice of curating objects, both found and created, and using those things as a resource for creativity (see first 2 images, below).
Each object typically has a manufacturing technique or material quality that I appreciate. I rarely initiate ideas on the computer, preferring physical prototypes to help guide decisions and potential products (see images below).
Also, it's selfish, but I think it's really important to create things that you want to see in the world.
