Both believe in being more appreciative of small joys and living in the moment. As fate would have it, they stumbled upon the Danish word hygge just as they began to discuss a way to share this concept with others. They love the way that it simply yet profoundly captured what they were trying to achieve in their own lives. While hygge manifests itself differently for each person, it is ultimately about living better. By collaborating with artists and discovering new ways of joyful living, Christiana and Aimee hope that Hygge & West will inspire you to create more hygge in your own life.

The name Kalon is derived from the ancient Greek concept of ‘to kalon.’ To be kalon is more than being beautiful; it is having a beauty that both is and inspires excellence. For the Greeks, this meant a beauty linked with moral worth and usefulness. For us this means making products that aren’t only beautiful in form but beautiful in concept as well.
Kalon Studios believes that true beauty radiates from the whole but has its roots in the details and so from their hardware to our motifs, from our raw materials to their finishes, they laboriously handpick each element so that it too, alone, is kalon.

Our story begins in 1967, when our founder Tim Bergeron was a student developing a new type of therapeutic equipment for children. He found this research both exciting and close to home. His daughter was born with Down syndrome and he wanted more than anything to help her live a comfortable life. From his research, he discovered many children in the juvenile market could benefit from these products as well.
Tim enlisted the help of his son Jamie, daughter Katie and innovative designer Ross Nadeau, and soon Keekaroo was born. After designing the adjustable Height Right High Chair, Keekaroo focused on creating the perfect seat cushions. Each seating solution offers a more comfortable seating experience, more support and a soft, easy to clean surface for mom and dad.

The original design, the authentic material. In 2000, Modernica revived the potentially lost art of high-pressure, molded fiberglass. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in their Los Angeles factory—just as they had been designed, developed, and produced by the Eames Office, in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team Charles Eames employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology.
Modernica is committed to the legacy of the authentic genuine design of Charles Eames. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair.

“Ideas and materials are closely related. The idea takes its form only when working with the material. I only trust a particular form when I have touched it with my fingers. I am able to communicate with the manufacturer as well as the end user through the particular object, and I see myself as a fertile minimalist. Everything counts. Neither more nor less! I aim at finding the uniqueness in the simple design and vice versa. Every single day brings new design challenges which I would like to take up”.
