We are so very excited and honored to partner with Modernica, manufacturer of the Case Study Fiberglass Shell Chairs originally designed by Charles Eames.
With the original Eames designs, using authentic materials and traditional Eames methods each Fiberglass Shell Chair is made by hand by Modernica, the same way it was first manufactured and remains made locally in Los Angeles, CA.
And while the Herman Miller chairs look similar, the only legit aspect of the official Eames Shell Chairs that are manufactured (in plastic, yikes!) is the name "Eames". The name! Herman Miller does not follow the exact profile design of the base as designed by Charles Eames (as shown in the image above) but adds a whopping 5.5" to the Case Study Eiffel base! Modernica, however has remained true in their production of the modern Case Study Shell Chairs and is the only manufacturer to do so in fiberglass. And their process is fascinating! You can view an amazing video which gives a candid glimpse into the manufacturing process. Such amazing details go into the production, just as the Eames' intended. Modernica also utilizes all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics, the first manufacturer of the Eames Case Study Shell Chairs in the 50's.
